Tiwi Land Rangers
Updated: Oct 1

Tiwi Rangers play a critical role in managing and protecting the Tiwi Islands’ natural and cultural heritage. The Tiwi Marine Ranger Program, which established in 2001, was the first Indigenous marine ranger program in the Northern Territory. Five years later the Tiwi Land Ranger Program commenced and in 2023 the groups combined to form the Tiwi Rangers. Women first joined the Rangers in 2021 and now make up 25 per cent of the program.
The Tiwi Ranger Program demonstrates that caring for Country delivers environmental, cultural and social benefits. Activities include:
fire management – for carbon abatement and wildfire mitigation
biodiversity conservation - habitat and threatened species management
invasive species management
sea country management - coastal surveillance patrols, marine debris surveys, crocodile and sea turtle nesting monitoring
cultural heritage protection and maintenance
intergenerational knowledge transfer, education, training and capability development, as part of the Tiwi Junior Ranger Program
biosecurity monitoring
ecological research partnerships
field assistance including vehicle, vessel, and equipment hire
environmental contract work
The Tiwi Ranger Program is funded by the Australian Government’s National Indigenous Australians Agency.
